The rest of the day, we’re far from idle. We visit a few more farms to introduce the tourist circuit to the farmers. We then return to study the data Ian possesses pertaining to some of the projects the Redford Company has launched in the past, to prepare some solid arguments for the meeting with Carla the following evening. But there’s another small problem I must also resolve: explaining to my friends how it is that I’m now living at Ian’s. So, while he’s gone to dress for an appointment he refused to give me the details about, I call them.

“I can’t believe it! You agreed to share the house of a man who, in addition, makes you act crazily? You’re in love. There’s no shadow of a doubt!” Amy exclaims.

“Stop imagining things. I can’t be in love. I’ve only known him for a few days. However, I don’t deny being attracted to him.”

“Oh, please … You were attracted to Milo, and when he offered to spend the night with you, you made a fuss about it. You kept saying you couldn’t stand the idea of him invading your space.”

“I’m not sleeping with him. I have my own room,” I point out.

“We’ll see how long it will last.”

Allison doesn’t handle me with kid gloves either although she tries to be more diplomatic. “I’d consider it the best news of the year if you were in love with him,” she states. “It was time you fell in love, don’t you think?”

“Stop talking nonsense. I’m not in love,” I repeat when my eyes fall on Ian, who winks at me.

Awesome! That was exactly what my day needed.

“I can’t talk any longer,” I continue, but they’re not fooled.

“Is he there?” Amy asks with a laugh in her voice. “Did he hear you?”

Ian beckons to me to pass him the phone, which I do without thinking. It proves how disturbed I am. I hear him say, “Hello, I’m Ian.”

Still lost in my thoughts, I lose the thread of their conversation when his words bring me back to earth.

“Yes, Zoe will need some of her things, and I shall be delighted to meet you.” I wave to him that I don’t want any of my friends here, but he continues, “You’ll stay with us, of course. There are guest rooms at your disposal.”

I know it’s not polite, but I snatch the phone from his hands.

“Don’t listen to him! I don’t want you to come here.”

“Are you kidding? I wanted to go on a weekend, and we’ve never had the opportunity to visit the area. What better opportunity than this?” Amy rejoices.

She hangs up right away to avoid my thunder, so Ian inherits it.

“That was a low blow.”

“Don’t overreact. There’s nothing wrong with me meeting your friends, and to be honest, I like the idea of learning more about you.”

I throw him a dark glance that he ignores and leans to kiss me on the cheek before leaving. For my part, I try to reach Lindsay.
